The former One Direction got seal approval for his solo material

It’s been quite roller coaster for Zayn Malik, but he scooped new artist of the year at the American Music Awards on Sunday night.
The former One Direction star, who quit the chart-topping boyband – which included Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson – in March 2015, singled out his father for praise as he collected his award after a “crazy year”.

The 23-year-old Pillow Talk star from Bradford, who has been vocal about his battle with anxiety, said: “This just says my name on it, right?

“It’s been a crazy year. I can’t thank the people who have been with me everyday for the past year enough.

“To this very point, being stood on this stage is crazy.

My family, my mum, my dad, everybody in my family who’s been supporting me this last year, especially my dad actually, so thank you dad.

“Also big, big, big thank you to my f****** fans because you guys have been sick.

“I didn’t expect anybody to still vote for me so thank you for voting for me. I’ll put it on my fireplace.”

After collecting his award, Malik embraced his girlfriend, model Gigi Hadid, who is hosting the awards with comedian Jay Pharoah.

Malik beat Alessia Cara, The Chainsmokers, DNCE and Shawn Mendes to win the award, which is voted for by the American public.

The star was expected to have a small reunion with his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan at the awards, as the This Town star performed his debut solo single earlier in the night.

But they weren’t sitting next to each other, as Zayn was spotted sitting next to British icon Sting.
