Actor Steve Martin has been trolled by Newcastle United fans on Twitter after they got him mixed up with a Championship referee.

The North-East side, who have been flying high in the league, lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest on Friday night thanks to a number of controversial decisions.

Two players, JonJo Shelvey and Paul Dummett were shown red cards, a goal was disallowed and a penalty appeal turned down.

The man in the middle was Steve Martin and a number of Magpie fans evidently took to social media to vent their frustration at his performance.

Unfortunately, many of them tagged the account of comedian Steve Martin in their angry rants.

On tweet read: “I’m expecting that Henri Lansbury and @SteveMartinToGo will both be punished for bringing the game into disrepute tonight, cheating cant pay”
Another read: “@SteveMartinToGo should never referee at this level again.”

“@SteveMartinToGo absolute shocker of a performance Steve. Reffing in the championship is not for you”

Fortunately, the American actor took the unexpected attention in good grace, tweeting: “Evidently, there’s someone who’s a bad referee with my name, and now there are thousands of English who won’t go see my films anymore.
