Confirmed earlier today by ABC, former “Sopranos” star Drea de Matteo will be joining the cast of “Desperate Housewives” in the show’s upcoming 6th season. Following the death of Nicollette Sheridan’s “Edie” character earlier this year, ABC is reportedly anxious to fill the void by giving Wisteria Lane yet another “edgy” femme-fatale.

According to, 37 year-old Matteo’s character will be the “matriarch” of an Italian family, with the roles of her “landscape designer” husband and their “tightly wound son” yet to be cast. The news comes just 2 weeks after De Matteo became engaged to her longtime boyfriend, musician Shooter Jennings, onstage during a concert in Utica, New York.

Unclear so far is how Drea – who’s set to be a “series regular” on the show – plans on balancing “Housewives” with her role as Wendy Case on FX’s “Sons of Anarchy.” Having already been shot in the woods by Silvio on the “Sopranos,” perhaps Drea now has a meth overdose in her acting future?
