Australian politician James McGrath spoke out on Good Morning Britain

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have been invited to Canberra Parliament House.

The duo were asked by Australian politician James McGrath on Good Morning Britain today as he addressed their “insulting” joke about Aussies.

On Saturday night’s I’m A Celebrity , Dec introduced a segment by saying: “As you know this job is about ruling over a group of uncouth layabouts who rarely wash and can barely light a fire.”

Seconds later, Ant quipped: “Basically it’s like being the Australian Prime Minister.”

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have been invited to Canberra Parliament House.

Now angry Australians are demanding an apology while a string of Aussie politicians have blasted the pair.

Senator McGrath, who represents the state of Queensland and is Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, was previously quoted as slamming the Geordie presenters.

However, today he insisted to presenter Piers Morgan he was just joking.

Of course it was a joke,” he said. “I lived in the UK for six years. I know Ant and Dec and I think they’re great

They were throwing some comments in jest at us and we threw some right back at them. It’s what unites our two countries; the fact that we can poke fun at each other and then have a drink and giggle about it aferwards.

The policeman insisted he was joking when he said he was miffed with Ant and Dec

I don’t think too many Australians were really offended. We just feel sorry for the poor celebrities you send into the jungle!”

He added: “I’m A Celebrity is great for Australiia. We love that the show is filmed here and we want you to keep coming back.

“In fact, I would like to offer Ant, Dec and the winner to Canberra House for a few rum and cokes!”
